- After arriving at the church, Ponyboy and Johnny stacked up on an abundance of food and weeds to last them a week. Once Dally arrived they caught up on each other's experiences since Ponyboy and Johnny escaped.
- "How'd you know about the church?"
- "I got a cousin that lives near here sometimes. Told me it'd make a tuff hide-out spot in case of something."
- When Dally arrived he noticed Ponyboy and Johnny were much thinner than a week ago so he took them for a snack and they both ate like monsters. Then Johnny suggested to head back and it was agreed.
- "What!"
- "We're goin' back and turn ourselves in.""I ain't no record with the fuzz and it was self-defence. Ponyboy and Cherry can testify to that."
- "I guess so."
- "The window stopped him.""Naw... too fat"
- Very shortly into their journey back home they were shocked to notice that the church they were in was burning on fire heavily. Johnny and Ponyboy both found out from screams heard from inside that children were trapped so they both headed in despite the dangerous conditions.
- "Is that guy coming?""Too scared?"
- At the back end of the church, Johnny and Ponyboy found a group of children together behind a door. They managed to get the attention of all the children and one by one put them out the window to their teacher safely.
- "Shut up, we're goin' get you out!
- "Ouch!"
- "Where's Johnny?" "And Dallas?"
- Fortunately, Johnny and Ponyboy both were taken to hospital by an ambulance. Once all the children had been saved they both made a dash to the window in an effort to avoid severe smoke inhalation but in the process, Johnny was struck by a wood panel and is suspected to have a broken back.
- "Take it easy, kid. You're in an ambulance.""They're in the other ambulance right behind us. Just calm down. You're gonna be okay. You just passed out."
- At the hospital, Ponyboy was okay despite a large bruise on his back and a couple of minor burns on his body. This is because of his jacket preventing him from serious injuries. Soon, Darry and Soda turned up and were very pleased to see one another and know that the three of them were safe again.
- "Darry, I'm sorry."
- "Ponyboy... please be careful because I couldn't stand if anything happened to you."
