- In 494 BC, Agrigento, Italy there was a Greek pre-Socratic philosopher and a native citizen of Akragas, a Greek city in Sicily named Empedocles
- I’m Empedocles a Greek philosopher who is best known for my belief that all matter was composed of four elements: fire, air, water, and earth. Some have considered me the inventor of rhetoric and the founder of the science of medicine in Italy.
- About a century after Empedocles devised it, Aristotle popularized and added to it. Empedocles' four elements came to be known as the Aristotelian Elements. For over two millennia people believed these elements were the basis of all matter. The theory had incredible staying power.
