Storyboard Text

  • When large amounts of gold was found in Australia, people from around the world came to Australia to find the gold. So began the Gold Rush.
  • Soon too many people came to Australia to mine the gold out. So the government created the miner's licence. These miner's licences were used to keep track of the movement of the miners and the miner's had to pay 30 shillings a month (which was expensive) for the miners to keep their licences.
  • The miners that were caught without licences were fined and had their huts and equipment destroyed and sometimes even sent to jail.
  • On October, James Scobie was murdered at the Eureka Hotel. JF Bentley was accused, only to be thought innocent by the court. This made the miners mad. So they led a riot outside the Eureka Hotel and the building was burnt to the ground.
  • This began the Eureka Rebellion aganist the corrupt police. The first leader the rebellion had was a man called John Humffray, who pefered to have negotiations with their enemy. While the next leader, Peter Lalor, wanted a more aggressive movement from the rebellion that he led.
  • PEACE!
  • WAR AND LIBERTY!
  • John Humffray demanaded Governor Hotham to release all the miners that were captured at the burn down of the Eureka Hotel, end the miner's licence and introduce Chartist reforms. But Hotham refused and captured miners that came from Bakery Hill. It was then that Peter Lalor stepped forward and became the new leader of the rebellion.
