Storyboard Text

  • 1897: all existing suffrage groups merged together to form the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies.
  • I am Millicent Fawcett. If we want the vote for women, we will do it peacefully.

  • 1903: Members who were dissatisfied with the progress made by the Suffragists, formed the Women's social and Political Union, the Suffragettes, whop campaigned for the vote using militant methods.
  • 1909: Imprisoned Suffragettes started going on hunger strike. Many women were force fed, and became very ill. In 1913, as a result of public outrage, women were released from prison to get better, but the re-arrested. The suffragettes called this the Cat and Mouse act.
  • 1913: In the summer, the suffragists organised meetings which were held across the country finishing with a march in Hyde Park on the 26th of July with 50,000 people.
  • 1914: Both suffragist and suffragettes suspended their campaigns to complete men's jobs whilst they were at war. This involved working in munitions factories. Employers were recluctant to take on women, however women soon proved to be as skillful as men despite their little training.
  • Because of their help during the war:1918: women over the age of 30 or 21 and married were allowed to vote. 1928: All women were given the right to vote.
