  • As Jefferson said, we must link together these water routes to open up new ports.
  • We must report these discoveries to Thomas Jefferson.
  • In 1803 the President, Thomas Jefferson, hoped that Meriwether Lewis and William Clark would be able to link together a water route.
  • Linking both of these rivers would connect the Pacific ocean with the Mississippi River system which would give access to new port markets.
  • With journals in hand, Lewis and Clark alongside their other members reported all of their findings of the expedition to Thomas Jefferson.
  • Time to head home for St. Louis after a very tiring journey!
  • The spring of 1805 brought high water and favorable weather which helped Lewis and Clark settle in with their other members.
  • Lewis and Clark set out on their expedition once again and traveled up the Missouri River to try and connect the water routes.
  • Then in 1805 in the middle of November Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific Ocean. Finally on March 23, 1806 the exhausted explorers headed home for St. Louis.
