- The story takes place near an ocean where kino and jauna live in a brush house. "Across the brush fence were other brush houses, and smoke came from them too, and the sounds of breakfast, but those were other songs, their pigs were other pigs, their wives were not Juana."Family is all you can count on is the theme because they relie on another to stay sane in this environment.

- Kino is showing of his pearl with everyone admiring it. and the doctor comes and "cures" coyotito."So the doctor knew" His mind was full of suspicion."He then after the doctor came back still trusted him only because he wanted to make sure his family was safe. and the theme being Family is all you can count on.
