- Conflict: The US had economic interests in Cuba, Cuba wanted to rebel against Spain because they were unhappy with Spanish rule, the sinking of the USS Maine, and yellow journalism were the reasons for the conflict.
- Setting: The Spanish-American War started on April 25, 1898 and ended on August 12, 1898. The War took place in Cuba, Spain, and the US.
- Characters: Countries - Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines People - Teddy Roosevelt, William McKinley, Jose Marti
- Beginning: The USS Maine sank, McKinley demanded a truce, Spain didn't meet the conditions,Congress declared war on Spain. Middle: The US blockade trapped the Spanish in the Santiago harbor. Middle: Roosevelt led the Rough Riders to victory at San Juan Hill. Middle: US destroyed Spanish Fleet at Santiago. Middle: US took control of Puerto Rico. End: Spain recognized Cuban independence. End: US became world power.
- Resolution: 1. Cuba gained independence from Spain. 2. The U.S. gained territories overseas (Guam, Philippines, Puerto Rico). 3. US seen as a world power.
- Moral of the Story: The Big Idea I learned was: Sometimes a country can help another country, like the US helped Cuba, but also help themselves at the same time.
