Garbage patch and the Earth!

Storyboard Text

  • Plastic Pollution Killing Our Oceans!Jack WyantProf FosterENG 102
  • This is the Earth many centuries ago. It had clean oceans, clean air and NO POLLUTION!
  • This is what is happening to our Earth currently. The Earth is being flooded with pollution all around the globe.
  • We are being choked to death by the amount of plastic that we throw away. It's killing our oceans. It's entering into our bodies in the fish we eat.
  • Here's what countries cause the biggest pollution...
  • And here's why China leads...look at that production!
  • The result of this pollution is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch!
  • It's so much plastic!
  • What's worse is that it breaks down into "microplastics" and sinks to the ocean floor.
  • However, most debris is still found on the surface.
  • Can't this effect the food chain?
  • Yes, 1/4 of the fish sampled at California fish markets contained mircroplastics.
  • So, Kevin Bacon was right, we're eating plastic.
  • Is there any way we can stop this from happening?
  • Actually, yes, there are many different ways we can prevent pollution from getting to our oceans.
  • Yes, there is...Gracie, meet Boyan Slat. He's founder of The Ocean Cleanup.
  • I created a system that skims and collects trash off the ocean surface, called the Interceptor.
  • But, what do you do with the plastic?
  • My system will remove 50% of the Great Garbage Patch in just 5 years. And, 90% by 2040.
  • They make these!!!
  • That's right! These are made from 100% Great Garbage Patch plastic. By purchasing these, you support our non-profit to continue removing plastic from the oceans.
  • Another important cleanup project is by TerraCycle...
  • Beach Plastic Cleanup Program...what a great idea.
  • Rigid plastics include soda bottles, water bottles and beach toys. Currently, they have collected over 150T of beach plastic.
  • That's great, and anyone can join their program and send them items.
  • I'M TIRED OF THIS! People need to start changing their habits.
  • I don't want to eat this.! There has to be small things we can do now that will make a difference.
  • I can make a difference...I'm going to bring my own cup to Circle K and not get a straw.
  • I can too, I'm going to start bringing recycled totes instead of using plastic bags.
