Congo was first colonized by the Belgium king, Leopold II in the 1880s. Leopold’s officials began to force millions of citizens to labor under draining conditions to transport rubber to Europe. In1908, the conditions became a worldwide scandal and the Belgian government seized control. Congo eventually won independence in 1960 which they were not prepared for. Anyway, Patrice Lumumba, the young new nation’s first leader was showed to be incapable of governing. Over the course of time the nation’s leader was overthrown and killed by Congolese enemies. As a result, the Civil war commenced until 1965, when General Joseph-Desire Mobutu took control and changed the name of the country to Zaire. He opposed communism which earned a liking from the United States. Rebels seized power in 1997 and changed the country’s name to Democratic Republic of the Congo.
