It was less than ten minutes. That was the time that separated Alisson Matos, a 43-year-old executive driver, from the mud that descended and swallowed the place where he had just been. He had left the inn in his car after delivering some goods to the family he served. Routine. Nothing that pointed to what was to come.

The message arrived via WhatsApp, in some group, with the urgency of those words you hope never to receive: the dam had broken. "Get out of there, get out of there," they said. And that's when Alisson, passing behind the Cachoeira Park, saw with his own eyes what the messages tried to describe in text: a mass of mud descending.

The immediate impulse was to turn back. To retreat, to wade into the mud, to call for someone, to do anything. Alisson tried. He couldn't.
