- Once upon a time, there lived a smith in a small village in Belgium. From early in the morning until late at night, he worked really hard and yet his family struggled to survive.Oneday he had to visit a dying relative in a village far from their home. He did not return until very late in the day, because it was a long journey on foot that took hours.
- Suddenly he was frightened by an angry captainbehind him. He commanded all the devilish dwarfs to capture the smith and bring him on board of his ship De Vliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman).The smith begged them to let him go. He wanted to go to his wife and children but the captain had no sympathy.
- GRRRR, yes captain!
- Take him to my ship!
- The poor smith had to work hard on board andhardly had anything to eat. The captain and his crew occasionally left the ship to go on a treasure hunt.
- HELP, please help me!
- Each time, the dwarfs fastened the smith when they leave the boat. They came back with boxes full of jewels. After each treasure hunt, the captain left one dwarf behind in the robbed town to make sure that he would eventually have all the jewels for himself. Each town that was robbed was cursed and turned into a ghost town where the dwarfs withhis devil's pitchfork ruled the roost.
- This is all for me!
- Weeks, months, and years passed in this way. After a while, only the greedy captain, one dwarf, and the smith were on board. The smith had to make beautiful jewels out of the stolen bars of gold. While working, the smith thought of his dear wife and children all the time.
- I miss my wife and children so much...
