Storyboard Text

  • Hello. I am a pharaoh. I am here to tell you about pyramids. I have traveled forward in time to see what has become of this pyramid, the Great Pyramid of Giza. A pharaoh named Khufu commissioned the building of this pyramid, and thus it is also called the pyramid of Khufu.
  • Yeesh, what a mess! Time to go back to my time.
  • Much better. You see, this pyramid was originally covered in carefully trimmed white limestone and had a gold or electrum capstone at the top.
  • Pyramids are monumental structures in ancient Egypt with a square or triangular base and sloping sides that met at the top (if you can't tell by looking at this).
  • Workers extracted limestone blocks from places called quarries, like the one shown here. They used materials like chisels, wooden planks, and hammers to accomplish this.
  • They then used ramps made of mudbrick to drag limestone blocks into their place on the pyramid. Each pyramid took around 30 years to build with a force of around 10,000 workers.
  • Pyramids were used as tombs for dead pharaohs and the rooms held a lot of treasure.
  • Other pyramids in Egypt include the pyramid of Khafre and the pyramid of Djoser, which are located in the Giza Plateau and the Saqqara Nome, respectively.
  • There are also many interesting facts about the pyramids. This pyramid, the pyramid at Dahshur, shows that the Egyptians experimented with the slope and shape of the pyramid. While it was being built, the workers decided the slope was too steep to continue, so the top part of the pyramid's slope is different.
  • The Egyptians were not the only ones who built pyramids! The Mayans also built pyramids like the one shown here in present-day Mexico.
  • That's all for now. Thanks for listening!
  • END.
