- I know the gunman did something awful, but I don't think he should be executed.

- No, he should definitely be locked up forever, I just think the death penalty is part of a flawed system. It should be abolished.
- I'm not sure I'm swayed. What else should I know about?
- Actually, lots of studies say that the death penalty can't really be called deterrent. And, for years, states without the death penalty have had lower murder rates (Death Penalty Information Center).

- According to Cohen and Smith (2010), racial minorities are unfairly represented on death row. Plus, they are more likely to be sentenced to death if their victim was white versus of color.
- You're joking, right? People like this don't deserve to live! Plus, the threat of execution is probably keeping a lot of criminals at bay/
- Okay, I'm seeing the ethical issues, but what about cost? Isn't it cheaper to execute the worst criminals rather than keep them in jail?
- Yeah. Even worse, the NCIP reviewed 4,000 cases, and found 707 in which the prosecutors committed misconduct. In 78% of those, the convictions were upheld anyway (Ridolfi and Possley, 2010).
- I think I'm starting to see what you mean...maybe capital punishment should be abolished.
- Nope, in Texas, since 1997, it has cost taxpayers three times more to have someone executed instead of keeping them in prison for life (Sween, 2014).
