  • Background: The final peace treaty of the thousand-day war is signed in 1902 on the battleship USS Wisconsin of American nationality in Panamanian waters. Taking advantage of the lack of communication with the central government of Colombia, the Panamanians decide to ask the United States for help to separate from Colombia and with the interests in the construction of the interoceanic canal by that country they make the separation be achieved.The Colombian government does not put an end to relations with the United States and, on the contrary, enters into talks, but in conflict, achieving the Thomson-Urrutia treaty on April 6, 1914 signed in Bogotá between Thadeus A. Thomson (USA) and Francisco José Urrutia (Colombia), where a compensation of 25 million dollars is obtained but it is ratified until seven years later in April 1921, giving rise to the period known as the dance of the millions (1923-1931).
