- Kara Bond -- 5th period
- Beginning: Elena is in her bedroom thinking about how she wasn't able to study with Eugene yesterday after school. School is out in respect of JFK, so her mother wants to observe luto with the whole family.
- I'll be out in a second Mama!
- I wish I could have studied with Eugene yesterday. I hope I can see him again soon, though I don't know when I'll be able to.
- Elena, come to the living room for luto!
- Climax: Elena joins her family in luto in the living room. She tries to behave respectfully in front of her parents to avoid any more unnecessary conflict.
- Mama I'm so sorry for not listening to you yesterday. You were right about me heading for humiliation and pain.
- Thank you Niña, I'm glad you remember who you are. We need to stay close during this difficult time.
- Resolution: After her family is done with luto, she goes back into her bedroom and begins to study on her own. She thinks more about Eugene again and imagines how he might behave around her after his mom did not let them study together.
- Climax
- When school starts again, I need to see how Eugene behaves around me. What if he doesn't want to be around me anymore? I know his family won't be staying here for long, but I want to spend as much time with him as I possibly can.
