- The Trojan War started because of an incident at the wedding reception of Peleus, the king of Thessaly, and Thetis, a sea goddess. All of the gods and goddesses of Mt. Olympus had been invited except Eris, the goddess of disagreement.
- Eris was very offended and tried to cause trouble for the guests at the wedding. Eris made a surprise visit to the wedding reception. She threw a golden apple of discord on the table. She said "this apple is for whomever is the most beautiful."
- The goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite each said that the apple was meant for them. Each one thinking they were the most beautiful.
- Zeus decided that Paris, Prince of Troy would decide who is the most beautiful. Paris had to decide which of these three powerful, beautiful goddesses was the most beautiful. Paris told all three goddesses that whoever offered him the best bribe would be chosen as the most beautiful.
- Paris judged the three goddesses and finally awarded the apple to Aphrodite because she had promised him Helen (her half sister) whom he publicly thought was the most beautiful woman in the world. Aphrodite was not happy when she heard that Paris thought her half sister was the most beautiful woman in the world. According to Aphrodite, there really was no comparison between her and her half sister, Helen. Helen had a boring life, married to the king of Sparta. Aphrodite had no interest in being married. According to Aphrodite, she herself was the most beautiful goddess in the land.
- Helen was already married to King Menelaus of Sparta but when Paris came to see her she fell in love with him and ran away with Paris to Troy where they expected to live happily ever after.
