I Deserve to Be SafeThe Role of Children's Services
Hi there! My name is Alicia and I am a Caseworker with Alberta Children's Services.
Woof!
...ha! And this is Scout, my Service Dog!
You may be wondering, what is a Caseworker? What is Children's Services?
I am here to help you understand a little bit of what we do to keep kids safe!
This is the Clark Family. They consist of Jarred, Melissa and their daughter, Ashley, whose 9
Hello, My name is Alicia and I'm with Children's Services. Thank you for meeting with me today. I just was wondering if we could sit down and go over some concerns.
Jarred and Melissa have been out of work for over a year and are having trouble making ends meet, paying bills, and making sure there is food on the table.
Ashley has been missing some school days, showing up in the same clothing as the day before. She has mentioned to her teacher that she often doesn't eat dinner and that her parents haven't been getting along
Ashley got called to Mrs. Jones, the school counsellors office
Ashley, I just wanted to ask you how you are doing. I noticed you're missing some school days. What's been happening at home?
Well...my mom and dad have been fighting a lot. Sometimes my dad drinks beer and comes home and acts mean to my mom...
most of the time...yeah....I mean my dad can be scary sometimes. He yells and hurts my mom sometimes
Oh Ashley, I am sorry to hear that. Mom and dad's fight sometimes. Do you feel safe?
Thank you for telling me, Ashley. This conversation stays between us today okay?
ok..
Later that week...
We received a call from Mrs. Jones later that day, concerned about Ashley. I went out to meet Ashley's family at their home to talk about safety.
uh...sure
well...I think we shouldn't be fighting in front of her...
so, I just wanted to talk about Ashley's safety. You care a lot about your daughter and I want to get some ideas as to how we can help her be safe. What do you think?
Well...I've been stressed out because we haven't worked in a long time....and I shouldn't be taking it out on Melissa...I guess I can cool off first
I agree. How do we ensure that Ashley does not see any fighting?
okay. sure.
Right. I understand that not working is very stressful. I can connect you to some great resources and programs to help with that. Would that work for you?
I think we could use some help with groceries and maybe getting Ashley to school. I don't have a vehicle
It can be harmful for Children to witness adults fighting or yelling. Like i mentioned, I know you care about Ashley so much. Is there any other goals we can think of to keep her safe?
Okay. We can look at doing that as well. sounds like you have some good ideas and know what Ashley needs. I'll follow up with you soon.
thank you
1 month later...
Ashley has been doing better getting to school and has seemed happier. Her dad got a job at a mechanic shop and he and her mom have been doing well.
