Miss Emily Grierson dies. Everyone in town goes to her funeral. The men in town view her as a fallen monument, while the women are curious to see the inside of her house. No one apart from her servant had seen her house in 10 years. Her house falls on a select street in town.
A deputation knocks on Emily’s door. Emily’s servant lets them in. She starts off by telling them that she has no taxes in Jefferson. She asks them to check the city records to assure them that she has no taxes. The men tried to convince Emily that she must pay her taxes, but she was too adamant to believe them.

Emily goes through depression and her house starts to stink. A few neighbors complained to the judge, so he sent four men to her house. The men sneaked in at night and sprinkled lime in the cellar.
Emily’s father dies leaving her alone. She refuses to let go of her father’s body. She tries to convince the townspeople that her father is not dead. They were only able to dispose the body and bury him when she broke down.
After her father’s death, she was left alone. The only thing left for her was her house. Townspeople start pitying her. Now that she is a pauper and she is left alone with a few pennies, they finally humanize her.
A construction company sends some laborers to the town to pave the sidewalks. The townspeople begin to see Emily with one of the laborers, Homer Barron, on Sunday afternoons. They would be riding a yellow buggy. Homer got to know everyone in town in a short time.
