The towns people gather on a nice sunny day in the town square. The young boys collect stones and put then in a pile. The men talk politics and farming and women come out in their house dresses.
Climax
Mr. Summers the organizer of the towns activities pulls out the old black box from before old man Warner was born. He mixes around the slips of paper and starts calling out names.
Falling Action
One by one the men (or in some cases the women) come up to the box and pull out a paper. They all go back to their spots in the group and wait for Mr. Summers' signal to open the papers
THE END
Mr. Hutchinson opens his paper and finds a black mark on it. Tessie; his wife gets upset and starts yelling "It's not fair." Mr. Summers calls the rest of the family up and they each get a slip of paper. One with a black mark on it.
Tessie; Mrs. Hutchinson receives the paper with a black mark and starts screaming it's not fair even louder while the group surrounds her and starts picking up stones from the pile the boys made.
