Storyboard Text

  • Hi! My name is Zoe. I am 8 years old.
  • This story is about an unhappy memory of my mom having a stroke.
  • This is my family. My mom, dad, and my sisters Izzy and Tilly. We live in Cornelius, North Carolina.
  • Before my Mom had her stroke, me and my cousin, Emma, were in my bedroom playing when we heard crying.
  • A funny memory I have is: one day, we were at school and one of my teachers was reading a book. Another teacher was sitting down in the chair, and was rocking on it, and fell backwards onto the ground, and everybody started laughing!
  • When I came into the room I saw my mom crying and Izzy and my dad on the floor. I felt scared. I had just turned 8 and I had no clue what was happening.
  • We rushed upstairs into my sisters' bedroom and looked out their window, and saw fire trucks, police cars, and ambulances. I was scared, because they were all lined up in front of our house and we had no clue what was happening.
  • My dad called 911 and the doctors came right away, and hooked my mom up with wires.
  • We had to go to soccer and it was my last soccer game of the season. When we got home, we rushed over to our friends' house because nobody was home at our house.
  • We woke up in the morning and decided to make a big banner for my mom. We talked to her, and discovered we all ate the same thing for breakfast!
  • We were all curious about what was happening and what was going to happen. We had no clue. The doctors hooked my mom up to cords and just drove away in the ambulance like that. It made me feel scared. We had to leave the house ASAP. I thought:" I want my mom to come home soon."
  • Later that day, our friends' mom said "We have a surprise for you at your house." We got in the car, and drove to our house.
  • After our friends left, we had an ice cream party and watched a movie.
  • Later that day, my Dad came back and spent the night at our house with us. My grandparents and my dad just rotated back and forth every night. I liked it because we were still able to spend time with our grandparents, and we still got to see our Dad even though most of the time he was in the hospital with my mom.
  • My Mom finally got back from the hospital. She still needs to rest a lot, though. She needed a lot of fluids for her body and she looked kind of pale, and really tired. When I saw her, I felt very, very excited.
  • When we got back home, our friends were waiting at the house and they had started a meal train for us. We had sort of a little party for my Mom, which was nice.
  • My Dad got my Mom a gift bag with Wonder Woman clothes and a doll and a cape.
  • After everybody got back and ate dinner, we went over to our cousins' house and had a party.
  • When my Mom got home from the hospital, it was kind of sad because all she wanted to do was be around family, but she had to go to lots of doctor's appointments. My grandparents were nice and stayed for another month to be with us and take us to sports and stuff. My mom wasn't home a lot, but when she was she was in her bed resting. I felt bad for her, because all she wanted to do was come home, but all she could do was lay on her bed and go to appointments. We didn't really see her which was hard.
  • A few months after my mom got out of the hospital, she had to get heart surgery. I was scared for her, and I was also super happy because then she would be feeling better.
  • I knew my Mom was getting better because she was taking walks. She keeps getting better and better.
  • The worst part of this experience for me was probably having my Mom in the hospital, and not getting to see her until 5 days later when we figured out that we were allowed to go visit her. The FaceTime didn't work very well. I felt sad, and I was also curious because I had no clue what was happening. It was 2 or 3 months after I turned 8, so I was younger then.
  • One way I have changed since my mom's stroke is that I no longer sweat it so much when people get a small injury, like if somebody fell off their bike and they got a little scrape. There's more important things in life.
  • If I could give advice to another kid who has had trauma, I would tell them that the best part about it is they're going to get better and they're going to recover. You may not know how yet, but you're going to.
