First, as you see here, I enter the mouth. You sense the yummy food coming into your mouth, so your saliva glands starts pumping out saliva, before the food even reaches your mouth. As you chew, the saliva mixes with me to create a soft lump of food called bolus.
The bolus(yea that's me) then travels down a long, skinny tube called the esophagus. The esophagus's muscular walls squeeze the bolus down to the stomach, my next destination.
Then the food is broken down in the stomach into small pieces. The stomach contains hydrochloric acid which is very corrosive. Once it is broken down it becomes a porridge like substance called chyme. Once it comes out of the stomach it goes into the duodenum where it is broken down some more. It also connects to other parts of the digestive system such as your liver, gall bladder and pancreas.
From stomach, I enter the small intestine. It is a small stretchy tube packed beneath the stomach. It breaks down the food even more so the important vitamins, minerals, nutrients and proteins can be absorbed into the blood through small, finger-like projections called villi.
All the parts of me that is still unwanted goes into your large intestine. It passes through a part of the large intestine called the colon where the body has one last chance to absorb any water or minerals into the blood. What's left is a hard mass called stool.
The large intestine deposits me in a small pouch where I am held until I leave the body through the anus. And this long journey through the digestive system, which takes about 30-40 hrs, finally ends.
