So let's go check out how to repair a small drywall hole...
On the job site - small hole repair
Location: Mike's workshop
Here are a few small nail holes that will need to be filled
Materials needed - small hole
Materials needed: Damp rag, carpenter’s knife, spackle or joint compound, putty knife and sandpaper.

What is not needed to repair a small hole? putty knife drywall saw carpenter’s knife sandpaper.
On the job site - medium hole repair (anything smaller than six inches)
Here we will need to clean off the hole and then prepare to fill it with spackle.
Here is a medium sized hole that will need to be filled
Materials needed - medium hole
Clean the hole by removing any loosedrywall debris.Use a carpenter’s knife to puta beveled edge around thecircumference of the hole.Use a damp rag to wipe off any dust.Use a putty knife to fill the hole withspackle or joint compound, and thensmear the filler to make it flush withthe wall.Allow the filler to air-dry.Lightly sand the area with sandpaperand apply a second coat. Sand once dry.Prime and paint over the filled hole.
On the job site - large hole repair (anything larger than six inches)
Sand and clean the area around the holewhere the patch will contact the wall.Apply the adhesive side of the patch to the wall. Cover the patch with a joint compound.• Use a crisscross pattern with yourputty knife to apply the compound.• Apply enough compound to cover thepatch and have enough to feather.• Once dry, lightly sand and applyanother coat.Sand the dry second coat withsandpaper.• Feather the edges to blend the repairinto the wall.Prime and paint.

List the steps to repair a medium sized hole
Here is a large sized hole that will need to be repaired.

Materials needed - large hole
Materials Needed: New drywall, drywall saw, pencil, furringstrips, drywall screws, joint tape, jointcompound and sandpaper

Cut out a square piece of new drywallthat’s slightly larger than the hole.Put this piece on top of the area thatneeds to be patched, and trace aroundit with a pencil.Use a drywall saw to cut out thedamaged drywall along your trace lines.Place the furring strips through the hole.Pull them tight against the backside ofthe drywall and anchor them from thefront with drywall screws.• Make sure the screws firmly anchorthe furring strips to the back of thedrywall. The screw heads should beflush or slightly dimpled.Set the new drywall patch in place,and secure it to the furring strips withdrywall screws.Hold everything together by bedding indrywall tape with joint compound alongthe edges.Cover everything with drywall jointcompound.Lightly sand once dry and apply asecond coat.Sand the second coat once it dries.Prime and paint.
