  • I'm so excited to go to the beach! It's not that hot out so we don't need sunscreen, right?
  • Of course we still need sunscreen! You've got to make sure you're sun safe and minimizing your exposure to UV rays.
  • Yeah. We wouldn't want to risk getting burnt.
  • It's more than getting burnt; if you don't properly protect yourself from the sun you could get skin cancer! Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of skin cells. There are 3 main types: Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Melanoma.
  • Wow! I thought there was only one type of skin cancer. Can you tell me more about the types when we get to the beach?
  • For sure! I would bring a sun hat just in case too! I'm bringing the umbrella so we can be extra safe from UV rays!
  • Tell me more about Basal cell Carcinoma.
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma occurs in heavily sun- exposed areas of the skin, such as the face and neck. It typically appears as pink little bumps that grow slowly.
  • Interesting. Let's get up and kick the beach ball.
  • Luckily, they are almost never fatal and usually appear starting at age 40.
  • You remembered to put on sunscreen, right? We are using an SPF 30 with UVA and UVB protection, so we are safe for about 2 hours.
  • Yup!
