The exposition of The Outsiders, includes characters, settings, and background knowledge. The Characters in The Outsiders are Ponyboy, Darry, Dally, Sodapop, Two-bit, Johnny, Randy, Bob, and Cherry. The setting is in a neighborhood, city, church, and hospital. Background knowledge is there are two gangs named the Socs and the Greasers. The gangs hate each other and they fight during the book.
Climax
The conflict in The Outsiders is the hate between the Socs and the Greasers. This hate will result in fights and anger between the two gangs.
Falling Action
The rising action of The Outsiders is when Johnny kills Bob. After Ponyboy gets hit by Derry, Ponyboy runs back to Johnny who was waiting for him back at the park. Socs drive by Johnny and Ponyboy spotting them, in an effort to not get jumped, Ponyboy and Johnny try to get away. Ponyboy and Johnny get caught next to a fountain by the Socs. Bob and some of his Soc friends go to have a talk with with Ponyboy and Johnny. The Socs call Ponyboy and the Greasers names, so in defense Ponyboy retaliates and Bob gets mad. The Socs push Johnny to the ground and Bob goes to choke Ponyboy in the water fountain. Johnny sees this and pulls out his switchblade. in an effort to save Ponyboy, Johnny stabs Bob and the Socs run away. Ponyboy and Johnny stay sitting there trying to catch their breath and take in what just happened. After a bit, they leave the fountain to get help from Dally.
Resolution
The climax of The Outsiders is the rumble and the death of Johnny. The rumble is the highly expected fight between the Socs and the Greasers. Everyone goes into an all out brawl after the first punch is thrown, Greasers against Socs. The Greasers won the rumble and ran right to the hospital to tell Johnny. They tell Johnny about them winning and all Johnny says is, "Useless...fighting's no good." Johnny then says, "Stay gold, Ponyboy," and dies. Dally freaks out punching the wall and storming off.
The exposition of The Outsiders is when Dallas dies. Dallas out of frustration of Johnny's death, goes and robs a grocery store. Dallas Calls Ponyboy, Derry, Sodapop, and Steve to tell them he robbed a grocery and the cops are chasing him. All four of them open the door to have Darry get inside and stay safe. Instead, Dallas stops under a light, turns around, and pulls out his gun. Ponyboy thinks about Dallas telling him about carrying a gun with no bullets. Still the police shot Dallas killing him. Everyone starts to break down and cry.
Ponyboy returns home with his brothers after court and tracking down Sodapop. Ponyboy remembers the project he has to save his English grade. Ponyboy tries writing something on a piece of paper, but he can't write anything he likes. He get's a idea and calls his English teacher to ask how long the writing can be. He finds out the writing has to be no less then 5 pages. He sits down and thinks about an idea to write about himself. He starts the writing by saying, "When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house. I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home." Or the beginning of the novel, The Outsiders.
