Ulysses S. Grant was the general of the Union, Northern, army. He commanded the Union army in victory with the anaconda plan. This plan aimed to shut down the Confederates trade, ability to obtain resources, and economy. It eventually worked, and the North won the American Civil War.
After the southern states seceded from the Union, they needed a president. Jefferson Davis was elected to fill the spot as the president of the Confederacy. He governed the nation while Robert E. Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson fought the war with the Union.
One of the main advantages of the South, other than the fact that it was fighting a defensive war, was its generals. Robert E. Lee was the main general of the Confederate army. He commanded many of the major battles between the North and the South. He is known for his skill commanding an army.
"Stonewall Jackson" is known for holding the Confederate line at the First Battle of Bull Run. This gained him the nickname of "Stonewall" Jackson. He was later referred to as one of the great generals of the Confederate army.
