Storyboard Text
- Scout tries to ask Atticus what “rape” is, and the subject of the children’s trip to Calpurnia’s church comes up. Aunt Alexandra tells Scout she cannot go back the next Sunday.
- You may not.
- I didn't ask you!
- Later, she tries to convince Atticus to get rid of Calpurnia, saying that they no longer need her. Atticus refuses.
- Alexandra, Calpurnia's not leaving the house until she wants to.
- "Both of you go to bed right now"
- Scout gets angry at being lectured and attacks Jem.Atticus breaks up the fight and sends them to bed.
- Scout, try not to antagonize Aunty, hear?
- You tryin to tell me what to do?
- Scout stepped on something warm and it felt alive. She assumed it was a snake and called Jem to check it out for her. He looked under the bed, finding Dill hiding there. Dill told them his new father locked him in the basement in chains.
- What are you doing here??
- Dill?!
- The real reason he had run away was because his mother and his new father were not giving him enough attention. He had taken thirteen dollars from his mother's purse, caught the nine o'clock train from Meridian to Maycomb Junction and walked the rest of the way.
- Dill claimed they wouldn't miss him and they didn't need him. He begged them to not send him back. Atticus asks Scout to get more food than a pan of cold corn bread for Dill, before going next door to tell Dill’s aunt, Miss Rachel, of his whereabouts. Dill eats, then gets into Jem’s bed to sleep, but soon climbs over to Scout’s bed to talk things over.
