- Main characters: Bod, Mr. and Ms.Owens, Silas, and Ms. Lupescu. Setting: the graveyard. Problem: Bod is a toddler whose family was murdered. He has no place to live. The ghosts of the graveyard decide to take Bod in. He is given the freedom of the graveyard. Bod is a wanderer. Silas is a vampire who is Bod’s guardian. The freedom of the graveyard allows Bod to go through anything in the graveyard, see in the darkness, see ghosts, and fade only when he's in the graveyard.
- Falling Action
- Bod can not leave the graveyard because it is not safe in the real world for him. Bod wants to go to the real world because he is sick of being trapped in the graveyard. He goes to the forbidden part of the graveyard and befriends Liza Hempstock. She is a friendly witch that has no headstone. Bod Wants to get a headstone for Liza Hempstock.
- Resolution
- Bod leaves the graveyard and goes to the antique store so he can sell his brooch for money then he can buy a headstone. Everything goes wrong and he gets locked in the closet. The witch helps him fade so he can escape. He escapes and takes the paper weight and paint so he can make a headstone for Liza Hempstock.
- To be continued...
- Silus is upset with him because endangers himself. He gets spanked by Mr. Owenes. Bod returns the brooch. He returns to the forbidden area and makes a headstone with the paperweight and paints for LizaHemstock.
- The macabre (the macabre is a dance that the ghosts and living have together but only the ghosts remember). Silus starts answer Bod in less detail and is less open to answering his questions. He starts to lose his power of the graveyard because he is growing up. The real world is still not safe for Bod.
- The world is still not safe for Bod Jack is still out there looking for him. This is only volume 1 in a 2 part series
