Starr is at a party when she sees her best friend from when she was little. Starr and Khalil caught up on life. A shooting goes on and Khalil takes Starr and leaves.

Khalil gets pulled over by the police for a broken taillight. Starr tells him to listen and follow the directions of the officer, but he doesn't. Then pow the police officer shoots at Khalil three 3 times and Khalil drops to the ground and dies.
Protest
Everybody wants to talk about how Khalil died, but this isn't about how Khalil died. It's about the fact he lived,Khalil lived! You hear me? Khalil lived!
Starr and he family attend Khalil's funeral. Starr feels some type of way because she was there when he was shot by the police officer. Starr and her family only know that she was a witness to Khalil's death.

People are realizing and shouting and marching and demanding. They're not forgetting. I thin that's the most important part.
Starr is interviewing with a national news program a week before testifying before the grand jury since she is the only witness to the shooting. The officer made it seem that it was all Khalil's fault for why was shot. After the interview she was on television she was known. Her life changed after.
There's a protest. Starr and the community is looking for justice for Khalil. Despite what you think Khalil was,his death was tragic and he deserve justice.
Starr has learned how important it is to speak up for what she believes in.
