  • The setting of the story or more importantly the symbol of the door is extremely important. The door mirrors Sergei's childhood and the issue of the KGB harassing him and his family. In Russia, when Sergei was young , it happened plenty. The KGB felt right at home knocking on his door. This shows Sergei's paranoia about people knocking on his door, and his want to be left alone.
  • Conflict
  • You killed him, Sergei. You murdered someone- but your not a murderer
  • In the story Yonatan is a flat character because he only shows devoted and nice character traits. Sergei is a round character because he shows thst he is mean, abrasive, and stubborn.
  • Point of View
  • The climax of the story is when the boy starts to get close to the fish after Sergei sees how close the boy is getting to it. At this point Sergei reaches for the burner and hits him in the head with it, thus killing him.
  • Theme
  • The conflict in this part is man vs self. This is because after he killed the boy he starts to break. The fish knows he regrets his action and sees him trying to fix the situation. Sergei can fix it with his last wish but he also doesn't want to use it because he is afraid to be alone. This is man vs self because he knows what he has done is bad and doesnt know what to do about it
  • The story is told by a narrator, in 3rd person omniscient.
  • The theme of the story What of This Goldfish Would You Wish Is that Sergei had to make a decision that wasn't beneficial for himself in order to save someone else.
