- Silas Marner, a weaver, lived in Lantern Yard with his fiance, Sarah, and his best friend, William Dane. One night, Silas took care of a sick Deacon when he had a fit. William betrays him by framing Silas for stealing the Church's money. Sarah breaks their engagement, and Silas is exiled from Lantern Yard

- Sad and betrayed, Silas moves to the town of Raveloe where he sits at his loom in his old cottage and weaves. He louses faith in god and becomes a miser, living alone and isolated.

- Duncan Cass tricks his brother into marrying an opium-addicted woman named Molly, which Duncan uses as blackmail; Godfrey then neglects his secret marriage and pays Molly to keep his secret. On New Year's Eve, Molly decides to avenge Godfrey by showing up at the Red House but dies of an overdose on her way there. Her baby is left in the snow but crawls to Silas's Cottage

- Godfrey and Nancy get married. Silas raises Eppie, the baby, as his own. Eppie changes Silas's life and shows him the best of human nature. Godfrey keeps an eye on Eppie
- Eppie, now 18, turns down Godfrey's offer to be his child and stays with Silas. Silas also has his gold returned, which Duncan Cass stole, who they find dead in the quarry near Silas's house with Silas's gold next to him. With his gold and adopted daughter returned to him, he is the happiest he has ever been in his life
- Once Silas recuperates everything he lost, he returns to Lantern Yard with Eppie to see if his innocence was ever restored. When they arrive at Lantern Yard, they find that it is gone. When Silas and Eppie return to Raveloe, Eppie marries Aaron Winthrop, and they all live in Silas's cottage.
