"STOP! CLARA! PLEASE!" I hear a familiar voice call. I hear a loud thump. "GRUFF! NO!" I run over to the net. "The lion and the mice," Gruff says, the net choking him and making his voice eerily soft. I smile. I told him the old story, how the lion didn't eat the mouse because he promised a favor and how the mouse had come through in the end. "I'm the lion... you're the mouse...but I wouldn't eat a friend." Gruff's voice is getting softer and softer. Oh, wait! I grab the knife from my hidden scarf pocket and cut Gruff loose. He breathes in lots and lots of air. "The hunters are here for you but not you alone." I whip away a tear. "You almost died, Gruff!" I shout. He smiles. "But you saved me. Without you, who would convince the humans into freeing us if we were to get caught?" I smile at Gruff's logic. "CLARA!" That wasn't a dragon. That was Jennifer.
Jennifer hugs me so tight I can't breathe. "In a few weeks, it's back to school for you," Jennifer says. "No, I'm not leaving my family." Jennifer gives me a pitying look. "I am your family. Me, your parents, Marcus, Emily Grandma, Grandpa...we're you're family. Not that monster that kidnapped you. That's what Ashley told us. She was very persuasive." I pull out of my cousin's grasp. "First of all, Gruff and his family have more heart than you! AND ASHLEY TRIED TO KILL ME!" Jennifer shakes her head and laughs. "She said you tried to kidnap HER. YOU tried to kill HER!" Jennifer smiles. "I can help you clear your name." I take a deep breath and make the easiest decision of my life.
"Gruff, take me home," I say happily. "Goodbye, Jennifer! Love you!" Gryff takes off before Jenni can protest. "Thanks for choosing us," Gruff says. "You guys are my family," I respond. "Next time, let's have more adventures." Gruff chuckles. "We can explore the forest for miles." I close my eyes and let Gruff's steady wings and the beating of his heart soothe me to sleep. I'm going home.
