  • Charles the Great
  • Feudalism
  • Manorialism
  • Charlemagne, or Charles the Great, became king of the Frankish Empire and unified and expanded it greatly. He spread Christianity and education, which led to an intellectual revival. The triumph of Christianity blended the cultures of Germanic society and ancient Rome into the culture of medieval Europe.
  • After Charlemagne died, Europe divided and unity was no more. Multiple invasions by Vikings led to increased fear and a need for protection. Because of this, feudalism was created. The system of feudalism included a cycle of military service in turn for land and protection. Instead of a single government, many people now held power.
  • After the invasions stopped, life in Europe was more peaceful. Labor-saving devices were being invented and agriculture was easier. Under manorialism, serfs, or peasants lived and worked on a landowning noble's land. Serfs had to give labor services, pay rents, and be subject to the lord's control. In return, the lords protected them which gave them the safety to farm the land
