Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

By Lauren Ayube

Ella was born into a wealthy family in the land of Frell. As all newborn babies do, she received a special gift from the fairy Lucinda: the gift of obedience. No matter what, Ella was to obey every command that was given to her, and she mustn’t tell anyone about her gift. As Ella gets older, she realizes that this isn’t quite the gift that it was intended to be: it was a curse.

Storyboard Text

  • SELFLESSNESS
  • Say you'll marry me, Ella.
  • POWER
  • My dear, I hate to cause you grief, but you must end your friendship with her.
  • I choose my own friends.
  • Ella’s selflessness is evident throughout the story. Perhaps her greatest act of selflessness is when she refuses Char’s marriage proposal in order to keep him safe, even though she loves him and wants to be his wife.
  • No! No, I won't marry you! No one can force me!
  • Although Ella is born into wealth and privilege, her gift of obedience causes her to lose control of her own actions. She does not have the power to make her own choices. Hattie abuses her power by tormenting and tricking Ella into doing things she doesn’t want to do.
