Originally part of a speech, many variations of the poem have circulated since the 1950s. Niemoller wrote these words after he spent seven years in Nazi concentration camps for opposing the Nazi control over churches, and realized the immense mistreatment that Jewish people endured.

- I'll move when I'm good and ready, new girl.
- Excuse me, I need to get to my locker.
- Um, you can't hang out with us anymore. No one likes you.
- Nice hair! What are you, like 6 years old?
- First she was mean to the new girl. But I did not know the new girl, so I didn't stick up for her.
- Then she was mean to my friend. But it wasn't me she was bullying, so I didn't stick up for her.
- Then she was mean to me. No one stuck up for me.
