- Look, it's the mute girl.
- Who was it, daddy?
- Did you hear about the new girl? She's gone.
- Marlee is afraid to speak in front of people she doesn't know. As a result, kids often call her "mute", which upsets her and makes her feel bad.
- Marlee and her family are getting threatening phone calls because they are "integrationists". This is scary to Marlee, but she wants to continue doing what she believes is right.
- Marlee's Challenges
- Marlee struggles a great deal with the fact that Liz had to leave school because she wasn't white. She doesn't understand why some people care so much about skin color.
