Social Emotional Learning Read Alouds

By Lauren Ayube

Read alouds are an excellent way to begin a lesson or to initiate conversations with students about topics that may be tricky to talk about as a group. Read alouds show students that these issues and feelings are so common that someone actually wrote a book about them. They don't have to be afraid to share how they feel!

Social Emotional Learning Read Alouds

Storyboard Description

In The Little Red Pen, the supplies must cooperate to solve a problem. Students can illustrate their favorite part and explain why as part of social emotional learning.

Storyboard Text

  • Favorite Scene from The Little Red Pen by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel
  • My favorite scene in the story is when everyone finally gets Little Red Pen out of the trash can, and Highlighter shouts, "It worked! And we did it all by ourselves!" I like this part because they cooperated so well and no one really did it by themself. They all worked together.
  • We did it all by ourselves!
