The play begins with the Birlings and Gerald celebrating Gerald and Sheila's engagement. The inspector cuts the celebrations short by coming to the house introducing himself as inspector Goole and telling the family that a girl named Eva Smith has taken her life by drinking disinfectant.

The inspector tells Arthur that he is partly to blame by not giving Eva a pay rise and firing her. Sheila finds herself partly to blame after finding out that the dead girl was a girl that Sheila got fired from her job in a shop because she was jealous of Eva. Next Gerald confesses to having an affair with Eva under a new name of Daisy Renton. Next the inspector finds Mrs Birling responsible for refusing Eva help from the charity she is a member of. Eric also confesses to being the father of Eva's unborn baby.

The inspector has left and the family begin to blame each other for the death. Before Gerald returns and thinks that the inspector was not real and there was no real evidence of a girl dying and them being to blame. Mrs Birling, Mr Birling and Gerald seem pleased that they are not to blame and they only care about what happens to them and not what happened to the girl. the play comes to an end with a phone call from the police saying a girl has died from drinking disinfectant and an inspector will be sent.
