In Chapter 1, the setting takes place on a gloomy and rainy day. Jane sits on the window sill and reads Berwick´s History of British Birds. John shames Jane for reading and throws the book at Jane. They start fighting and Mrs.Reed comes in and sends Jane to the ¨red room¨ as a punishment.
You have no buisness to take out books; you are a dependent, mama says; you have no money; your father left you none; you ought to beg, and to not live here with gentlemen´s children like us, and eat the same meals we do, and wear clothes at our mama´s expense.
Jane go to the red room NOW!
In Chapter 2, Jane gets sent to the ¨red room¨ by Mrs. Reed and Bessie, which is where her Uncle Reed died. She gets frightened by a ghost-like figure in the mirror, thinking that it is the ghost of Uncle Reed. She passes out and goes to sleep from her fear of the ghost.
AHHHH!!
In Chapter 3, Jane wakes up to herself in her bed, surrounded by Mr.Loyd and Bessie. Bessie reassures her that she´s ok and she should probably go back to bed and get some sleep. They continue to comfort Jane and Bessie sings her a song.
I will try.
Do you feel as if you should sleep, Miss?
In Chapter 4, Mr.Brocklehurst comes to suggest Jane to attend Lowood. He judges Jane about how well her religion is and quetsions her on what she must plan to do in order to avoid hell. He continues to attack her with tons of questions, on Christianity and Mrs.Reed warns Mr.Brocklehurst that Jane has a tendency to lie. Jane is very upset that Mrs.Reed would say something so awful about her.
I must keep in good health, and not die.
What must you do to avoid it?
Good-bye to Gateshead!
Jane leaves Gateshead at 6 in the morning. She then arrives at Lowood and isn´t looking forward to staying there. The next day she ends up meeting Helen, another orphan girl at Lowood. They become good friends and spend a lot of time together.
