  • Hi, my name is Leala and welcome to my expression of interest. I wanted to tell you a few things about myself, my career journey and why I'm interested in the policy residency program.Although my background is in biology and natural resources I think you'll see in my cover letter and resume I have a wide range of experience, I enjoy a challenge and I have a desire to build on my policy skills.
  • Biology Department
  • I was fortunate to start my career 15 years ago working on a range of natural resource operational programs like species at risk, renewable energy and land use planning. I gained valuable skills working with stakeholders, the public and government agencies. I was also able to dig into challenging issues and use my problem solving and technical skills to provide advice.Side note: at the same time my partner and I were building our dream hobby farm complete with my horse, Luke and an apiary! But, after a few years I was contemplating "What's next with my career"?
  • So....next career stop, policy! Since 2011 I've lead the development of several policies, strategic initiatives, legislative and regulatory changes and Cabinet submissions.I have collaborated with some fantastic colleagues in multi-disciplinary teams, honed my research and analytical skills, and managed some complex and contentious projects. I've influenced policy outcomes, made recommendations to managers and worked through some fairly tough negotiations.
  • But, recently I've been thinking "I know I'm passionate about my job and my team is A+, but how do I continue to grow my skills and capacity as a policy professional"?

  • Cue the policy residency program! I'm at a stage in my career where I want to try something new, learn from other professionals and master new tools.I'm keen tp apply my wide range of skills and experiences to tackle some exciting government priorities. I hope my resume further demonstrates my qualifications and interests.
