Storyboard Text

  • A tragedy, the play features our tragic heroes Romeo, an impulsive (his tragic flaw) but well-intentioned young man who is drawn into a destructive conflict that leads to his downfall.
  • CAPULET
  • "Romeo and Juliet" is set in Verona, Italy, and revolves around two star-crossed lovers from two different feuding families, the Capulets and Montagues.
  • MONTAGUE
  • The conflict between the two families is not only a source of social unrest but also personal tragedy for Romeo and Juliet.
  • Their love is forbidden and doomed from the start, with Romeo's self-defense killing of Tybalt and Juliet's subsequent unwilling marriage with Paris further emphasizing the nature of the lovers' forlorn tragic relationship. The tragic elements of the play are made clearer still by the violence and death that surround the lovers, ultimately culminating in the aforementioned killing of Tybalt Romeo's banishment from Verona.
  • The tragic final catastrophe of "Romeo Juliet" is the death of the two lovers. Romeo's death is a direct consequence of the feud, as he is banished from Verona, and thinking Juliet dead, kills himself with poison. Juliet's death is both a tragic end to her love story and a desperate act of despair, as when she finds out Romeo is dead, she chooses to die rather than live without Romeo. The fashion in which the play ends serves as a poignant reminder of the tragic consequences of their forbidden love and the destructive feud between their families.
