The Mayans were known for their unique art and architecture. Mayan architecture includes sophisticated decoration and art, including beautiful murals.
Temples
Common mayan homes were made up of wooden poles and thatch, much like their descendants today. They tended to build upon a wooden base, and when that base rotted, they would tear it down and build it again on the same foundation.
City layout
The palaces the maya built were large with multiple stories. They were home to the king and royal family and tended to be constructed of stone with wooden structures on top. The Mayan palaces were spacious and had courtyards. There were also different structures that could have been patios and towers

Temples: Temples were built of stone also, with platforms and wood or thatch structures on top. Temples were usually shaped as pyramids, with steep stone steps leading up to the top, where important sacrifices and ceremonies took place. Many temples had stone carving and glyphs. Certain temples where built so that they were aligned with Venus, the sun and the moon. For example, in the Lost World Complex at Tikal, there is a pyramid and it faces three other temples. If you are standing on the pyramid, other temples are aligned with equinoxes and solstices because important rituals took place at these times.
Cities were laid out in plaza groups. They were built on irregularly shaped higher ground, to avoid flooding and dampness. In the center of cities, there were important buildings, like temples and palaces. Residential areas radiated out from the city center, growing sparser as they got further from the centre. Raised stone walkways connected house and later, cities were built on hills.
