We, the Night-Blooming Cereus, are a flower that grow on cacti and bloom only at night so that we dont get dehydrated and die
Variation
Some of us bloom during the daytime, but we die due to dehydration pretty quickly.
Change in environment
Wow a river! We may not need to only bloom at night anymore! The river can hydrate us during the day!
The Night-Blooming Cereus are cacti flowers that bloom at night so that they don't get dehydrated and die from blooming during the day.
New Competition
Oh no! Competition! They might steal our water!
We will steal all of your water so that WE will live and YOU will not!
Some of the Night-Blooming Cereus bloom during the day, but they tend to die out due to dehydration in the hot desert.
Differential Survival
Our competition is adapted to be able to bloom during the day and survive! I fear that if we dont adapt, we will die out!
If a river were to form in the desert, the Night-Blooming Cereus would no longer have to bloom during the night because they can get a constant form of water and not die of dehydration.
Adaptation
Our parents may have died when we were born, but at least they passed on the trait of daytime blooming!
With the river formed in the desert, more of the Night-Blooming Cereus will be made, therefore giving the original Cereus will have more competition than before.
These new Cereus could have new adaptations that can allow them to bloom during the day instead of the night.
The original Cereus died out after planting its seeds in the desert. The offspring of original Cereus had the adaptation of daytime blooming.
