Storyboard Text

  • In the streets of Venice at night, Iago and Roderigo discuss their hatred for military general, Othello. Roderigo hates him for marrying the woman he loves, and Iago is mad that Othello promoted Cassio to lieutenant instead of him. They go to the home of Brabantio (a Venetian senator) and tell him that Othello has "robbed"  his daughter, Desdemona. Brabantio and Roderigo go to confront Othello, whilst Iago leaves before the senator can see who he is.
  • Brabantio and Othello go to see the Duke. Brabantio tells the duke that Othello has bewitched Desdemona and that she has been ‘abused and stolen’. Othello tells the duke that Desdemona fell in love with him because of the stories he told her of his life and insists she comes and explains the truth. When she arrives, Desdemona says she loves Othello and her duty is now to him, not her father. Brabantio warns Othello ‘she has deceived her father and may thee’ . The Duke tells Othello  he must go to Cyprus and Desdemona is allowed to accompany him.
  • A party is held to celebrate the defeat of the Turks and Othello’s marriage. Iago persuades Cassio to drink, knowing that Cassio can’t handle his drink. Iago sends Roderigo to fight Cassio and when Montano intervenes, Cassio injures him. Iago tells Othello, and Othello then strips Cassio of his rank. Cassio is terribly upset that his reputation has been damaged and Iago tells him to seek the help of Desdemona to convince Othello to give him back his role. This is part of Iago’s plan to trick Othello into thinking that Desdemona has been unfaithful with Cassio.
  • Desdemona agrees to help Cassio. When Cassio is seen leaving Desdemona, Iago implies that he lis eaving in a guilty manner. Desdemona implores Othello to reinstate Cassio. Iago insinuates that there is something going on between Cassio and Desdemona. When she returns, Desdemona offers Othello the handkerchief he gave her but he rejects it and it falls to the floor. Emilia finds the handkerchief, and gives it to Iago . Othello becomes angry and asks Iago for proof of Desdemona’s infidelity. Iago tells him about Cassio dreaming of her, and says he saw Cassio with the handkerchief. Othello decides he will kill Desdemona and asks Iago to murder Cassio.
  • Iago continues to goad Othello, resulting in Othello having a fit. Iago tells Othello to listen to his conversation with Cassio, making him believe that they are talking about Desdemona, when in fact, Cassio is discussing Bianca. When Cassio talks of her love for him and laughs at the idea of marrying her, Othello is outraged. Bianca then comes in  angrily with the handkerchief, (which Cassio had found in his bedchamber and given to her), declaring that the handkerchief is some “minx's token”. This makes Othello determined to kill Desdemona in her bed that night. Soon after, Lodovico and Gratiano arrive,  and Othello hits Desdemona in public for speaking about Cassio.
  • Roderigo is sent by Iago to kill Cassio, but he only injures him. Iago then murders Roderigo. Othello thinks Cassio is dead and so proceeds to murder Desdemona. Emilia arrives to tell Othello about the fight and witnesses Desdemona’s final moments. Emilia calls for help. She realises what has happened and tells Othello that she gave Iago the handkerchief and that Desdemona was innocent. Othello realises his mistake and stabs Iago, who stabs Emilia, runs away, but is brought back as a prisoner. Iago refuses to speak again and Cassio is given the role as general, meaning he gets to decide Iago’s fate. Othello makes speech before killing himself with a sword he concealed.
