Jacob, wanted to prove that he was right, chose to leave the priest hole and started walking, heading to find the curator. It was true, of course, what his dad had said. When Jacob was a kid, Grandpa Portman's fantastic stories meant it was possible to live a magical life. Even after he stopped believing them, there was still something magical about his grandfather. To have endured all the horrors he did, to have seen the worst of humanity and have your life made unrecognizable by it, to come out of all that the honorable and brave person. So, Jacob couldn't believe he was a liar, a cheater and a bad father.
Okay, I just... didn't want you to be surprised, that's all.
I don't worship anyone.
When Jacob arrived at the museum, he couldn’t find anyone. He hopes the curator knew something about the island's history and people. Figuring he'd just stepped out for a minute; Jacob entered the sanctuary to kill time checking out museum displays. For the most part the exhibits were boring, but one exhibit stood out from the rest. When he looked inside, he got scared and thought it was a monster, because it was a blackened corpse. Its shrunken body have an uncanny resemblance to the creatures that had haunted Jacob’s dreams. A voice is heard behind him and it’s the curator, they introduced themselves to each other and Jacob found out that his name is Martin Pagett. Martin tells him about the blackened corpse called ‘the Old Man’, and he is currently twenty-seven hundred years old, though he was only sixteen when he died. The Old Man was founded by Turf cutters in the bog, he looks like he was a human sacrifice, and he seems like he went to his death willingly.
I see you've met the old man!
Who's this, Wales's most famous murder victim?
The curator suddenly started to recite a poem to Jacob, about the Old Man. After the poem, Martin tried to kick Jacob out because it’s already too late. Jacob started to ask questions about Miss Peregrine and the people that lived there.
They're dead.Happened a long time ago.
I'm looking for anyone else who might have lived there, too, not just the headmistress.
