Salva, now left all alone during war is clueless of what to do. the group didn't care of him at all. this was the time Salva realised, if he were to get through this journey, he would have to become strong and independent to survive.

"during the daytime, Salva could hear the distant booming of artillery from the fighting a few miles away"
When Salva woke up he found himself to be all alone, but this wasn't the case. he stepped outside to see an old women, peacefully sitting down. Salva approached and had a conversation with her. she allowed Salva to stay, but since Salva didn't want to get kicked out of the barn since that was his only place to stay, he worked everyday. this started to teach Salva independence and strength, working daily to stay.
as Salva worked in the daytime, he started to hear bombing in the far distance.

As Salva works and survives the war, he starts to build resilience against the hot climate, strength, adrenaline and the hopes of finding his family.
