  • The deep cultural element present in this scene is family expectations, or definition of success. In "Like Mexicans", the text says, "For the good advice, she said I should marry a Mexican girl." This shows that in this Mexican culture, people are expected to marry within their own race, and if you do, that is the definition of a successful life. As shown in the skit and story, the narrator just does what he is told, and nothing different. This is forcing the protagonist to be someone he isn't, affecting his character overall.
  • You should marry a Mexican girl!
  • Okay, I guess...

  • Again, the cultural aspect of this scene is the definition of success and family expectations. In Dyaspora's text, it states "she warns you, your brother, and your sister to "respect your heads" as you drive to St. Angela's, never missing a Sunday service in fourteen years." This is showing that a close relationship to God and going to church is expected of you, and considered success. This expectation is affecting the protagonist to follow in her family's footsteps, resulting in her not being herself, just another version of her parents.
  • Yes Ma'am.
  • Yes Ma'am.
  • Yes Ma'am.
  • RESPECT YOUR HEADS AT CHURCH!!!

  • NOO!!!! I WANT TO BE A NORMAL AMERICAN GIRL!
  • YOU MUST GO TO CHINESE SCHOOL TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE OF YOUR HERITAGE!
  • Once again, the cultural elements that affect the protagonists in these stories are family expectations and definitions of success. The text in "The Struggle To Be An All-American Girl" says, "Every day at 5 P.M., instead of playing with our fourth and fifth grade friends or sneaking out to the empty lot to hunt ghosts and animal bones, my brother and I had to go to Chinese school. No amount of kicking, screaming, or pleading could dissuade my mother, who was solidly determined to have us learn the language of our heritage." This evidence shows us how her family expects her to learn her heritage, and speaking Chinese is deemed successful to her mom. All of the characters I have discussed have conflicts with these interests.
