King Minos (king of an island called Crete) "whose reputation for wickedness had spread to every shore" hired a skilled inventor and craftsman called Daedalus to build his palace. Daedalus brought his son Icarus with him. There was something a little suspicious that he wanted to be included in the palace. He wanted Daedalus to build a maze that no one would be able to escape from!
Come and build my palace Daedalus! I want it to have towers, a high roof, and a labrynth in the cellar! you shalll receive a handsome sum too!
Labrynth? A little peculiar... but I will accept your offer
Once Daedalus finished building the fine palace he finally figured out what the labyrinth was for. He had asked the King before but the only response he had received was: "Build my Labyrinth as I told you. I pay you to build, not to ask questions." Now he was told that the labyrinth was supposed to hold the Minotaur, a half-man, half-beast creature that ate people. Daedalus asked for his payment but was told that because he knew how to escape the maze (because he built it) ,and that information couldn't be leaked he, had to stay on Crete.
Daedalus and Icarus lived in a luxurios apartment at the top of a tall tower, but it was still a prison. They weren't allowed to leave the Island so guards would stand outside their door at night. Daedalus wanted to escape! Icarus didn't understand why his father would want to leave, because they lived in such luxury. "but I like it here. He said "the king gives us gold and this tall tower to live in." Daedalus told his son that King Minos was a wicked man and that they had to leave. Daedalus began to collect feathers and with those feathers, he built wings, held together by strands of wool from his blanket, so that they could fly away.
Once the wings were finished Daedalus stuck the wings to Icarus's back using hot wax, and then Icarus stuck Daedalus's wings to his back. As Icarus was about to take flight, Daedalus told him an important piece of information. He said " Above all, don't fly too high! don't fly too close to the sun!" Then the duo took flight...
GO ICARUS! JUMP!
As the duo soared across the sky Icarus became arrogant. "I'm the first boy ever to fly! I'm making history! I shall be famous!" Icarus yelled as he flew through the clouds. Then he mocked the sun and said " Think you're the highest thing in the sky, Do you? I can fly just as high as you! Higher, even!" Soon Icarus was so close to the sun that the wax that kept the wings stuck to his back was starting to melt, and that was when he fell. He tumbled through the sky, to his death. Now he remembered his father's wise words "Don't fly too close to the sun"
AAAAAHHHH
Nothing could save Icarus, "The clouds did not stop his fall. The seagulls did not catch him in their beaks." All that was left of arrogant Icarus were a few floating feathers.
