Impact on the lives of the British

Storyboard Text

  • affects ofIndustrialization on the lives of the British
  • The growth of the factory system due to industrialization caused most of Europe’s urban cities to double in size. As cities grew, people crowded into tenements and row houses in London and were forced to live under unhealthy conditions.
  • Wealthy landowners bought the land of village farmers and created enclosures where they experimented with more productive seeding methods. This forced small farmers to give up farming and move to the cities thus leading to the rapid growth of the population in the cities.
  • England lacked adequate housing, education, and protection for the rapidly growing population. With no development plans, sanitary code, or buildings code, workers were forced to live in dark dirty shelters, all packed into one bedroom.
  • An average worker spent 14 hours a day, 6 days a week and remained the same week after week. Working environments were seldom clean and no government program provided aid in case of injuries constantly caused by machines.
  • The British government exerted little control over child labor in factory cities. Children as young as six worked 6am-8pm for six days a week. To keep the children awake, supervisors would beat them. Tiny hands worked tirelessly under the dangerous machinery while unhealthy substances travel into their lungs.
