  • Pip Becomes Discontent with His Life
  • Break his heart!
  • He's a common, stupid, clumsy, laboring boy.
  • She's like a guiding star.
  • Pip's Benefactor Reveals Himself
  • I'm like your second father. I'm your benefactor!
  • Why didn't he leave me at the forge! I'll never be able to undo what I've done!
  • Contentment at Last
  • I've placed you in my heart. I hope I've changed for the better.
  • I've changed for the better too. We won't part again.
  • We are friends.
  • Pip's first visit to Miss Havisham's leaves him in love with Estella, who is his guiding light or candle throughout his life. Miss Havisham' s wedding dress and her house are portrayed as yellow because she and her house stopped in time at the same time as her stopped clock many years ago on her wedding day. This day chains Pip forever to his desire and fate to be a gentleman.
  • Pip has risen to the class of a gentleman due to a secret benefactor. However, when his benefactor reveals himself as Magwitch, the convict Pip helped as a young boy, Pip realizes Estella isn't meant for him and what great mistake he made abandoning Joe and Biddy. Magwitch feels like Pip's second father and holds Pip's hand to show affection, but all Pip feels is repugnance to a man of a lesser social class.
  • Pip goes onto Miss Havisham's property one last time as he still thinks about Estella. To his surprise, he sees her though she has changed much and is no longer proud but friendly and humble. Pip has also changed as he is content with his life but still holds Estella in his heart. Estella has also placed him in her newly found heart. As they exit the garden, mists rise and they hold hands because they can now see clearly that virtue is better than wealth and status and have a new friendship.
