  • Slaves were really important to help drive to the cotton industry, slaves had to work on the fields so that there wouldn't be a financial ruin, the cotton gin made cotton a hugely profitable cash crop in the South, and the South Produced 4 million bales of cotton in one year.

  • Slaves had to work day and night every single day. Some worked on fields, carried water, were blacksmiths or cooks, and the women were housemaids. Children at the age of 6 started working as slaves.

  • Slaves were often beaten, whipped, branded, and suffered from other forms of torture. In response to these sufferings, slaves ran away, refused to work, or took the form of passive rebellion acts
  • In their leisure time, slaves often had quilting bees and feasts where they would eat, sing, talk, and dance.
  • On Sundays, slaves gathered together and went to church. They created "invisible churches" for African roots where they had black preachers. Slaves sang spiritual songs and were taught the story of Moses where he lead his people out of slavery in Egypt.
